Pop Music Quiz Time!

Who was Cashbox Magazine’s Male Vocalist of the Year in 1965: Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, or Gary Lewis? (Hint: It wasn’t The King or The Chairman of the Board)

It was, in fact, Gary Lewis.

1965 was the breakthrough year for Gary Lewis and the Playboys. They released five singles that year: This Diamond Ring, Count Me In, Save Your Heart for Me, Everybody Loves a Clown, and She’s Just My Style. All of them reached the Top 5 in both Canada and the U.S.

This is my second visit with Gary Lewis. I also had the opportunity to interview him back in 2023.

Gary Lewis and the Playboys are part of the current My Generation Tour, with The Lovin’ Spoonful (with Steve Boone), and The Hollies, starring Terry Sylvester.

Recently Gary and I spent some time together on Zoom. It his second visit to Oldies Without Borders. This time, we spent time talking about the My Generation Tour, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and life in general.

The interview originally ran on Oldies Without Borders.

Oldies Without Borders

It’s “Music History with a Twist.”

Oldies Without Borders is a weekly deep dive into pop music: the hits and forgotten 45’s that were released on vinyl from the early 1950’s to the 1980’s.

It’s been on the air since May 2002.

If it was released on vinyl, cassette, or 8-track, I play it.

I also chat with the people that made the music, with full interviews posted here at VinylProfessor.blog.

It currently airs on the following community radio stations in Ontario: INDI 101-5FM (Hamilton), Halton Hills Online Radio (Georgetown), and Sunview 102 (Goderich).

I also curate a Facebook group that remembers old Top 40 charts (CKOC, CHAM, and CHIQ) from Hamilton, Ontario. It’s called Steel City Top 40 Surveys – Check it out if you can!
