Hamilton’s iconic punk band Teenage Head is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
I’m not sure how that’s possible, but I did the math. 2024 minus 1974 is indeed 50.
I swear I’m still in my late teens. I feel the same age I was when I first heard Picture My Face. Although, when I look in the mirror, it’s a picture of a much older face, but the spirit inside me is still burns as brightly as it did when I was 19.
My first Teenage Head album was Frantic City, which included the two sided hit Let’s Shake/Something On My Mind. The song would reach #3 on the CKOC All Hit 40 in April of 1980. It took the combined efforts of Blondie and Pink Floyd to keep them from getting any higher on the chart. The band also graced the front panel of the CKOC All Hit 40 that year.
On Saturday, April 6, Carmen’s is the venue for the 50th Anniversary Teenage Head Homecoming Party. In addition to the concert, the night will include Teenage Head memorabilia/artwork, and some cool merchandise, which includes silkscreen prints and a special T-shirt that both celebrate 50 years of the band. Clifford’s Brewery will also have a special brew available at the event.
The night promises to be a great opportunity to share stories and memories of Teenage Head and their music with other fans of the band. For information and tickets, check out the Teenage Head Facebook Page.
Dave Rave of Teenage Head joined me on Oldies Without Borders this week. We chatted about the event at Carmen’s and the legacy of the band.
I also had a chance to talk with Lou Molinaro, host of Lou’s Control on CFMU. He’ll be the emcee for the Teenage Head concert next week at Carmen’s. Lou shared his memories of the band, including that legendary night in June of 1980 at the Ontario Place Forum. He also offers his view on Teenage Head’s contribution to Canadian music history.
